Does anyone have any input regarding adapting to the wii controller? I'm interested in the wii but think that I will not like the controll scheme. For example, how is it playing a platformer like Super Mario Galaxy? Thanks.Benwii controller a deterrent?
While the controller may look awkward to use, it's actually very easy to get used to. Games like Galaxy, Metroid and Zelda have all made great use of it by adding just enough motion mechanics without over doing it. I can easily transfer between my 360 controller and the Wii one.wii controller a deterrent?
Not at all, that is why the wii is so popular, is how much fun it is to play. Mario is a good game, but once you play a shooter(a good one) you wont like gamepads as much. Play RE4 or Metriod, and having the wii mote puts you into a gun fight way better then any controller. Games like mario strikers, and no more hereos are just so much fun to play. You body wants to turn the contoller for a racing game, or punch some one, so let it
I think the only people that think of the Wiimote as a detterant are poeple that haven't played with it. Obviously there are games that don't utilize the controller well at all but these are mainly rushed crap that you wouldn't buy anyway. In Mario Galaxy it feels pretty much the same as using a normal controller for the most part, the Wiimote comes into it's own in FPS's when it's done properly like in MOHH 2 and MP3 the difference is phenomenal!!There are always going to be people who don't like the Wii-remote for whatever reason so your best bet is to have a go before you buy or just buy one and sell it on(you'll probably make a profit as well)
The design of the wii-mote is excellent. I prefer the Wii's controller setup to any other out there...
Thats a tricky question, for shovelware, like those ''games'' made by DDI the wii mote is a piece of ****. But for most game made by nintendo, capcom, EA, Ubisof and other good compagnies, the wiimote is pure win.
Try it, you'll like it. After playing Metroid Prime 3, dual analog control is a chore.
the wii mote is not the main probelm. once devs get use to it will be great. however i find the lack of hardware limits wii more then the wii mote helps .
Some games use motion sensing for really stupid things and the game would've probably been better off without the motion aspect used...others use it so that it either works really well with the game or they add really light motion sensing so that it's there but it's not there enough to ruin the gameplay.
The wiimote and nunchuck are what makes the Wii shine i feel. It is easy to get use to and much more comfortable in the hands than a regular controller. It worked great in SMG! In fps it is the best almost as good as a mouse.
For typical games that don't involve heavy gesture usage, you'll probably find yoursefl liking the Wii+Nunchuk combo better as you can rest your arms independent of each other, where-as with the 360 or PS3 controller you're stuck with the death-claw grip around both sides of the thing.
After playing with the wiimote+nunchuk i wish the X360 and PS3 controllers were also broke in half as well. I'm not talking about the motion detection, it's just very much confortable to hold each part separatly while playing i can't see how noone had used that before.
I was skeptical when I got my Wii for Christmas if I would enjoy the Wiimote experience. I was worried the console wouldn't feel ''video-gamey'' enough not having a standard controller. However, that wasn't the case at all. The games I have are quite intuitive and fun while using the remote. I like being to keep my arms and hands free and moving independently of each other as well. Much more of a positive experience than a deterrent.
Don't worry about the controls, especially for first party games. The games were MADE for these controls, so you know they will work well. Some thrid party titles don't adopt the controls very well, so be sure to research each third party game before you buy it.As far as using the controls themselves, you'll like it! I hope Nintendo sticks with this type of setup in future gens, because it's simply that good.
You will adapt eventually.
Thanks for all the input! It's good to know that others don't really have a problem with the controls when the games are designed well (first party, primarily, as I understand it).
Coming from someone who got a wii reluctantly and is still kind of reluctant about keeping it, the controls are actually very nice. It is a little strange at first but after playing Metroid, SMG, and MOH a little while it feels no better/worse than other systems controls. In some games (Mario) it works really well. My only big problem with the wiimote is that when you hold it naturally (in neutral anatomical position) the controller is pointed at the ceiling. So to do any actions pointing at the screen you need to cock your wrist or twist it to point the controller at the screen. Given, this is a pretty small complaint and most on screen usage is minimal, but it can be uncomfortable.

truth. a whole bunch of it!
The controller feels great for most games. Mario Galaxy for example feels great to play and the motion controls don't get in the way at all. Shooters like Metroid and Medal of Honour also feel great, much better than a traditional gamepad. But racers aren't so great, its better to play them on a 360
